Non-obvious tips for creating the perfect architectural portfolio

There are different types of portfolios, ranging from a website and a digital portfolio (in PDF format, for example) to a paper version. In addition, there are also many online platforms where you can present your work. The advantage of this is that you often get a much larger range. When you present your portfolio yourself, you can build it completely according to your own style and preference of architectural visualization.

1. Motivate your vision

Building a good portfolio requires self-knowledge. Who are you? Why do you do what you do? What makes you different from the others? Make sure that your personal vision of what you do and want to do in the future is included in your portfolio. Feel free to involve others and ask for their feedback, because they see things through different glasses.

Using an elevator pitch, you describe what you are doing in one sentence.

3. Don’t claim you can do everything

Young creatives who claim to be good at everything are very rare and also seem very unbelievable to potential customers. So play out your strengths. If you focus on a niche or a very specific domain within your sector, then that is definitely something you should emphasize.

Is there a project that requires different skills, then definitely consider working with other experts from your professional network. Always state in your portfolio what your part was in the project if it was a collaboration.

3. Make a strict selection of projects

Remember that it is always better to include five good projects in your portfolio than fifteen mediocre ones. So be critical about what you include in your portfolio and what not. Only show work that you fully support. Also, you can present work of room rendering but avoid work you don’t like doing.

Make sure you work out a number of your projects in your portfolio into cases, where the entire process is explained in each case. You go through the different phases of the process, from the challenge to the result.

4. Customize a portfolio

If you are targeting different types of customers, it is recommended to create different portfolios. That way you can adapt your portfolio to the needs of those customers that make them feel most appealing. Make a selection of relevant projects and show your talents that are needed to realize a new assignment.

5. Focus on talent, passion, and quality

This may seem obvious, but it is important that your potential customer immediately feels that you have the talent to tackle something in a creative, innovative way, that you really like doing it, and that this is your job. Make sure you show that you can lead the customer in the process, that you know how to approach a project. When you incorporate your way of working together in your portfolio, it will generate trust with the customer.
