Is HughesNet Gen 5 worth it?

If you are looking for satellite internet in your area, Hughesnet is the most economical and the best option available as there are only two options available when it comes to satellite internet. Hughesnet offers budget-friendly packages. The packages offered by Hughesnet come with a limited data cap and the speeds are not faster than 25Mbps. If you have used the allocated data, you can buy data tokens but that can be expensive.

Hughesnet Speeds

With Hughesnet Gen4, the customers used to get the downloading speed of 15Mbps but with Gen5 the speed has been upgraded to 25Mbps as it’s more advanced. If we compare Hughesnet Gen5 with other connections such as cable, fiber optic, or DSL, the speeds offered by the satellite connection would be less than what other connections offer.

With the other connections such as cable and fiber optic, you get reliability and fast internet speed. You can get speeds of up to 1000Mbps with cable and fiber optic option and you get an unlimited data cap as well. With DSL connection too, the speeds you get are good, and either you will get an unlimited data cap or can get a package that offers a data cap of up to 1Tb which is still a good deal as 1Tb is practically an unlimited data cap.

If there is any other connection, other than satellite connection is available in your area, it would be better if you go with the other connection as you will be getting better speeds, better features and it would be more pocket friendly for you.

Hughesnet Prices

The best part is that the plans offered by Hughesnet are the same across the country. There might be some promotions in some areas but the actual price of the package will remain the same. It would be easy for the customers to figure out the price and features of the package as everything would be pretty much the same with all the internet packages, the only difference would be the data cap.

The prices are higher when it comes to satellite connections because there are not a lot of options available. There are only two providers who are providing internet services via the satellite connection so here comes the lack of competition. That is one of the major reasons why the prices are higher when we talk about satellite connection because there are only a few internet service providers who are providing internet service via the satellite connection.

People living in rural areas do not have access to a lot of internet service providers. They have limited access to the internet service providers and they can only pick up an internet service provider from a box where there are only two are three options available.

Hughesnet Equipment

The equipment used by Hughesnet Gen5 is a small satellite dish and a modem that has built-in Wi-Fi. If you are thinking to get Hughesnet, you will get the option to either lease the equipment or purchase the equipment. If you are going to purchase the equipment, you will be saving around $10 at the end of your 2-year contract.

If you are planning to get a service which you are going to stick with and its Hughesnet, it would be better if you purchase the equipment once and for all. You will not be paying anything extra on monthly basis. It will be just a service charge. If you are getting Hughesnet service and you are not sure either you can keep the service for two years or not because you travel a lot and you might move to another state where you might get better options with the internet connections, you can just lease the equipment. For leasing the equipment, there are some requirements but if you fulfill those requirements, you can even qualify for a free standard installation and other discounts as well.

Hughesnet Early Termination Fee

As Hughesnet internet packages come with a contract of 2-years, there will be an early termination fee obviously if you cancel your service before the contract ends. If you cancel your service within the first 90 days, the early termination fees would be around $400 but the fee goes down each month after the first 90 days. When you cancel the service, you need to make sure that your return the equipment which is leased. If you don’t return the satellite dish and the modem within the first 45 days of cancellation, you will be charged an unreturned equipment fee.

Summing it up

If you are living in an area where you have limited access to the internet service providers and you don’t get a lot of options and the only shot that you have with is the satellite connection, you should go for Hughesnet Gen 5 for sure.
